A Matter of Fact

Rudyard Kipling

Three journalists at sea witness an extraordinary event — a dying sea-monster thrown up from the ocean depths by an undersea earthquake. The story turns on how such a strange truth could ever be reported and believed.

Activity Ideas

Write the same event twice: first from a child’s point of view, then from an adult’s point of view.
Compare what each narrator notices, misunderstands, or emphasises.

The way a character or narrator understands events.

First-person narrator

A narrator who uses “I” or “we” and is part of the story.

Why This Matters

The same event changes depending on who tells it. A child narrator may be funny because they misunderstand adult situations. Students learn that perspective controls what readers know, feel, and believe.
