Rip Van Winkle wanders into the Catskill mountains, drinks with a band of strange men, and falls asleep for twenty years. He wakes to find his village, his country, and his whole world transformed.

• Write a short scene that includes one flashback and one hint about what will happen later.
• Make sure both details affect the reader’s understanding of the story.

Narratives do not always move in a straight line. Flashbacks can explain a character’s fears or motives, while foreshadowing builds anticipation. Students learn to control time in a story.
