The Sultan's Demand
⏱ 4 min
Welcome to the great palace of the Sultan.
He is in a foul temper today, and cannot wait to execute somebody.
Glaring down at you from his golden throne, he demands you tell him a good story!
If you can keep him interested, perhaps he may spare your life for another day…
🧑‍🏫 Tutor:
What type of story might you tell?
Writers are a bit like chefs — their books follow different recipes.
These recipes are called genres.
A genre in English is a type of book.

🧑‍🏫 Tutor:
You may know some already…

✨ Take a dash of time travel, a sprinkle of robots, and mix them on strange planets — and you have a science fiction genre.

🕯️ Or, boil some ghosts, chop up some castles, and add a touch of darkness — and you have cooked up a gothic story.

Conventions
These 'ingredients' are called conventions.
Conventions are features of a book that show what genre it may belong to.
You show the Sultan your menu. He grunts, sips his wine, and waves at you to continue…

Remember — chefs often invent their own recipes by mixing ingredients. Writers do the same: a story can belong to more than one genre! For example, a fantasy story can also be an adventure, or you can have a romance that ends badly and becomes a tragedy!
The Sultan strokes his beard. "I demand a taste of every dish you offered!" he booms. "My appetite for stories is famous. Where will you begin?"

Prince & Princess
⏱ 6 min
Prince & Princess
Prince Camaralzaman has been imprisoned by his father after refusing to marry, shut away in a lonely room far from the world.
Meanwhile, in the distant land of China, Princess Badoura suffers a similar fate, locked in a tower for defying her own parents' wishes.

One night, two powerful magical fairies — each convinced that their chosen mortal is the most beautiful — decide to settle their argument.
While the prince and princess lie asleep, the fairies bring them together and place them side by side…
This advice pleased Maimoune and Danhasch, and the fairy at once transformed herself into the shape of a fly and settling on Camaralzaman's throat stung him so sharply that he awoke. As he did so his eyes fell on the Princess of China. Surprised at finding a lady so near him, he raised himself on one arm to look at her. The youth and beauty of the princess at once awoke a feeling to which his heart had as yet been a stranger, and he could not restrain his delight.

"What loveliness! What charms! Oh, my heart, my soul!" he exclaimed.

Sinbad & the Giant
⏱ 6 min
Sinbad the Sailor
You are a sailor, exploring the world and sailing to distant lands.
A terrible wind has blown you toward a strange island.
You find a castle, and a huge pile of human bones!
The owner is now arriving…
He had one eye, which flamed like a burning coal in the middle of his forehead. His teeth were long and sharp and grinned horribly, while his lower lip hung down upon his chest, and he had ears like elephant's ears, which covered his shoulders, and nails like the claws of some fierce bird.

At this terrible sight our senses left us and we lay like dead men. When at last we came to ourselves the giant sat examining us attentively with his fearful eye. Presently when he had looked at us enough he came towards us, and stretching out his hand took me by the back of the neck, turning me this way and that, but feeling that I was mere skin and bone he set me down again and went on to the next…
— from The Voyages of Sinbad
🧑‍🏫 Tutor:
Before the giant finds the tastiest one among you, you must answer five questions. Each correct answer hides one of you in a barrel. Each wrong answer puts you in his pot…
1) What is a genre?
2) What is a convention?
3) Can a book be a mixture of different genres?
4) Which of these is a genre?
5) Which of these is a convention (an ingredient)?
Very soon in came the giant, and one more of our number was sacrificed.
But the time of our vengeance was at hand!
As soon as he had finished his horrible meal he lay down to sleep.
When he began to snore, I and nine of the boldest comrades rose softly, took each a spit, made it red-hot in the fire, and at a signal plunged it into the giant's eye, blinding him completely…
— from The Voyages of Sinbad
6) How would this story end if it were a tragedy instead of an adventure?

Aladdin's Lamp
⏱ 7 min
Aladdin
A magician traps a boy called Aladdin in a dark cave…
For two days Aladdin remained in the dark, crying… At last he clasped his hands in prayer, and in so doing rubbed the ring, which the magician had forgotten to take from him. Immediately an enormous and frightful genie rose out of the earth, saying:

"What do you want of me? I am the Slave of the Ring, and will obey thee in all things."

Aladdin fearlessly replied: "Deliver me from this place!" whereupon the earth opened, and he found himself outside. As soon as his eyes could bear the light he went home, but fainted on the threshold. When he came to himself he told his mother what had passed, and showed her the lamp and the fruits he had gathered in the garden, which were in reality precious stones.

Fiction vs Non-fiction
The two biggest genres are Fiction and Non-Fiction.
These contain lots of other genres within them.
Think of Italian and Chinese cooking — these have lots of recipes, too.

Fiction = made-up or imagined stories (e.g. a romance)
Non-fiction = real facts and events (e.g. a history book)

You find a ruined palace
You go to the gate, which stands half open, and enter when no one answers your knock.
You pass through a magnificent courtyard, yet still see no one, though you call out several times.
At last, you see a handsome young man, richly dressed, sitting on a throne raised slightly above the ground. His face is full of sadness.

You say, "Sir, whose palace is this, and why is it so empty?"

Instead of replying, the young man lifts his robe and shows you that, from the waist downwards, he is a block of black marble.

You are horrified and beg him to tell you his story. "Willingly," says the young man, "I will tell you my sad history."

The Sultan's Verdict
⏱ 3 min
The Sultan raises an eyebrow. He has heard four tales — of love, peril, magic, and sorrow. He strokes his beard. The executioner stands waiting…

At last, the Sultan speaks: "You have a taste for stories, chef. I shall permit you to live one more day. Let us hope you can continue to feed my interest!"
👑
Good cooking, chef!
You have served the Sultan four tales and saved your life — for now.
Why do we care about genres?
📚 Genres allow us to connect to writers from the past, and build on their recipes. We can understand how to make our own additions if we want to!

🔍 They also help us make sense of the billions of books out there, and sort them into groups — far easier to find what you like.
✍️ What is YOUR favourite genre, and why?
2-3 sentences. Tell the Sultan about a book or film you love. What ingredients does it have?
